MYP History
In June 2018, Kuwait Bilingual School officially became an authorized IB World School offering the Middle Years Programme (MYP). In 2015, Kuwait Bilingual School formed a committee to study the implications, challenges, and changes required to implement the program. In 2016, Kuwait Bilingual School was officially accepted by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) as a candidate school for the Middle Years Programme (IB-MYP), later demonstrating the practices and programme requirements sought by the IB. KBS is part of the International Baccalaureate schools community, which share a common philosophy, and commitment to high quality, challenging, international education.
The IB goal is to provide students with values and opportunities that will enable them to develop sound judgment make wise choices and respect others in the global community. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) is a purpose-built five-year program (Grades 6-10, ages 11-16) for international schools. This now is being taught and implemented worldwide. It builds upon skills and units of inquiry learning developed in the IB Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). The IB MYP also relies on connecting classroom pedagogical practices and content to the world outside through the Global Contexts and the Learner Profile.
The MYP is an internationally renowned and rigorous academic programme. The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) provides a framework of academic challenge and holistic education for students aged 11-16. The MYP at Kuwait Bilingual School spans the three years of Middle School (grades 6, 7, 8) and the first two years of High School (grades 9 and 10). The subject groups taught in the MYP at KBS are:
- Arabic Language (Language and literature)
- English (Language Acquisition & Language and literature)
- Mathematics
- Sciences
- Individuals and Societies
- Physical and Health Education
- Arts (visual and performing)
- Design (digital and product)
- Islamic Studies
MYP, A programme of holistic education aims to encompass all aspects of personal learning and growth and emphasizes the development of active relationships at all levels, whether these are among the subject domains, between individuals and their peer groups and communities or between the individual and the world.
Students are expected to learn and demonstrate ATL skills that students will learn and develop throughout the MYP:
• Communication Skills: e.g. expressing ideas clearly, listening to others carefully…
• Social Skills: e.g. working in a group, encouraging contributions from others…
• Self-management skills: e.g. organizing yourself and your work, being on time…
• Research Skills: e.g. finding and gathering sources of information, note-taking…
• Thinking Skills: e.g. analyzing ideas and evaluating them, planning and creating work, and applying learning in one subject to another subject…
KBS students participate in service as Action and they have to complete, in MYP 5 (grade 10), an independent Personal Project. The IB MYP Personal Project is the capstone of the IB MYP. Over a period of nine months, from the end of year 4 to the middle of year 5, students undertake the creation of an individualized project based on their own interests. Through the completion of this project, students demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed over the five years of the IB MYP. Students are free to choose any topic of interest and create their project through the lens of one Global Context). Combined, these program elements exceptionally prepare KBS students to be Leaders of Tomorrow.
